Desert Storm Guide: Win the Street Fights, Beat the Snipers, Survive the Storm

Desert Storm is a free 3D first-person shooter that runs in your browser. Armed gunmen hold a walled desert town of mud-brick houses, markets and dusty roads, and you have an M4 rifle and one goal on each of the 12 stages: reach the exit across town. It runs on the engine of Sweet Bullet, the web remake of the Prasansoft PC game Thai Shooter, with a town built from the Desert Storm model pack for FPS Creator. This guide explains how to fight in the open and how to score big.

The town

The town is a square of about 80 by 80 metres inside a concrete wall. Three main roads cross it each way and cut it into sixteen blocks: most are houses, two are markets with fruit stalls, one is an army checkpoint with a tank, a Humvee and a container, one is a bus station, one is a palm park and one is a building site with scaffolding. Along the roads stand parked cars, crates, barrels, concrete and wooden barriers, bins and street lamps.

Desert Storm – a street of the desert town at noon
Stage 1, high noon: mud-brick houses, a bin for cover and the minarets of the old city behind the wall

Many houses have an open doorway and rooms inside. They are the best cover in town – and the gunmen use them as well. A gunman in a dark room is hard to see from the bright street, so look into each doorway before you walk past it.

How the gunmen fight

EnemyHealthRangeDamageHow he fights
Machine-gunner100about 15 m4–8 per hit, bursts of 4strafes, chases you, zig-zags when running
Sniper80about 30 m12–20, one shotholds his post, crouches, moves when you are far

Stage 1 has 18 gunmen: 6 machine-gunners and 12 snipers. Every later stage adds two more, up to 40, with more machine-gunners and better aim. A gunman who sees you raises his rifle and fires; when he empties his magazine he stops to reload – that is your moment to push.

Street fighting: six rules

  1. Cover to cover. Plan your next stop – a car, a crate, a barrier, the corner of a house – before you leave the current one.
  2. Cross fast. The crossroads are always open ground. Run across (Shift), do not stop in the middle.
  3. Hug the walls. Snipers on the long roads cannot see you when a house is between you and them.
  4. Heads first. A head hit does almost three times the damage of a body hit; two head hits drop any gunman.
  5. Short bursts. The M4 empties a 30-round magazine in three seconds. Fire three to five rounds, check, fire again.
  6. Reload behind cover. Never reload in the middle of the road.

Ammo and health

You start with 30 rounds in the rifle and 90 spare. Each stage has 10 + stage-number magazines (+60 rounds each) and four health packs (+40). Every exit you reach gives you +30 health and +30 rounds for the next stage, so a careful player rarely runs dry.

The weather of the 12 stages

StageWeather
1High noon – clear and bright, long sight lines
2, 7Sandstorm – thick orange dust, you see only a few metres
3, 8Sunset – low sun, long shadows
4, 9Dust haze – pale yellow haze
5, 10Night raid – dark streets, muzzle flashes give the gunmen away
6, 11, 12Dawn – soft light, cold colours
Desert Storm – the sandstorm stage
Sandstorm: gunmen appear out of the dust at short range

In the sandstorm and at night the snipers lose their advantage. Close the distance and fight at short range; watch for muzzle flashes and listen to where the shots come from.

Reaching the exit

The green arrow at the top of the screen always points to the exit, a green ring of light far across town. You do not have to kill every gunman – but every kill is worth points, and a gunman left behind may follow you. Walk into the ring to finish the stage.
