Free touch typing practice
Home Row Typing Tutor teaches touch typing step by step. You start with your fingers on the home row
(A S D F and J K L ;), then add the top row, bottom row, numbers, capitals and punctuation, and finish with full sentences.
Every lesson begins with a warm-up drill for each new key, followed by real words. The on-screen keyboard is color-coded by finger
and shows which finger to use, while your speed (characters per minute and WPM) and accuracy update as you type.
It runs in your browser with no sign-up.
Frequently asked questions
What is touch typing?
Touch typing means typing without looking at the keyboard. Each finger is responsible for its own group of keys, so your hands learn the positions and your eyes stay on the screen.
What is the home row?
The home row is the middle row of letter keys. Your left fingers rest on A S D F and your right fingers on J K L ;. The small bumps on F and J let you find the home row without looking.
What is a good typing speed?
Most people type around 35 to 40 words per minute (WPM). 50 to 60 WPM is good for everyday work, and 70 WPM or more is fast. Accuracy of 95% or higher matters more than raw speed.
How long does it take to learn touch typing?
With 15 to 20 minutes of practice a day, most learners can type every key without looking in two to four weeks. Speed keeps improving for months after that.
How is WPM calculated?
One word is counted as five characters, including spaces. Words per minute is the number of correct characters you type in a minute divided by five.
Is this typing tutor free?
