Who should play it

Players who want a classic, tactical shooter with a huge community. Newcomers should consider the newer Counter-Strike 2, which uses the same core rules.

Verdict

An essential competitive shooter with a long history. Our score: 8.5 out of 10.

Tips for players coming back

If you played the original years ago, the core rules are the same, but many maps and weapon details have changed. Spend a few casual matches on the maps you remember to relearn the callouts, and check the settings for crosshair, sensitivity and sound. Community servers and training maps are a good way to build aim without facing strong players right away.

Where the community gathered

Global Offensive had a huge community of tournament viewers, streamers and map makers. Many of the shared habits and terms that players use today were built during its years as the main version of the series.
