Super Mario Bros. 3 Famicom review

1988 · Nintendo · Platformer · Updated 2026-10-22

9.5/10

Mario's greatest Famicom adventure, with power-ups, world maps and a huge sense of freedom.

Super Mario Bros. 3 takes the original formula and expands it. Mario gets the Super Leaf, the Frog Suit and the Tanooki Suit, and each power-up opens new ways to play. The world map lets you choose paths and find hidden items.

Every stage is packed with ideas. The airship battles at the end of each world are short and inventive, and the variety from water levels to fortresses keeps the pace fresh.

It is one of the most polished platformers ever released, with excellent music and design. For many players, it is the best Mario game on the console.
