Final Fantasy Famicom review

1987 · Square · Role-playing game · Updated 2026-10-22

8/10

The original Final Fantasy: four heroes, a world map and the start of a long series.

Final Fantasy starts you with four light warriors and sends them to free the world from darkness. You choose their classes at the start, which gives you a team that can be shaped to your own strategy.

The game is a classic turn-based RPG. Battles are straightforward, but the economy of gold and the need to level carefully make each dungeon a test of planning. Hidden items and optional areas reward thorough exploration.

It is a clear ancestor of the series that followed. Its story is simple, but the world map and the sense of an adventure make it memorable.
