Dragon Quest III Famicom review

1988 · Enix · Role-playing game · Updated 2026-10-22

9/10

A hero, a class system and a world that show the best of old-school RPG design.

Dragon Quest III lets you create a hero and then choose a job later in the game. Warrior, mage, priest and many more combine into a party that can be built in many ways. This system made the game a favourite for players who like planning.

The world is large and full of optional goals, and the story unfolds carefully. The battles remain fast and readable.

The game shows how a Japanese RPG can be both friendly and deep. Many players still regard it as the high point of the early series.
